If you’ve ever been curious about what goes on behind the scenes at a modern mining operation, here’s your chance to find out. We offer free tours at the Eagle Mine and Humboldt Mill from June to September. Whether you're local or just visiting the Upper Peninsula, our guided tours offer a unique opportunity to learn how we safely and responsibly produce the nickel and copper essential to so many of the products we use every day.
Here’s what to expect:
On select Thursdays from July through September, we’ll alternate between two locations—Eagle Mine in Big Bay and the Humboldt Mill in Champion.
Eagle Mine Tours
Mine tours run from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the following dates: June 19, July 10, July 24, August 7, August 21, September 4, and September 18.
The mine tour is primarily a surface driving tour of our mine site, but you’ll also get to walk through our water treatment plant. You won’t be going underground, but you will see where ore is brought to the surface, where it’s stored and loaded into haul trucks, and how it’s handled before leaving the site. We’ll also stop by some of our key surface facilities like the truck shop, backfill plant, and—of course—the water treatment plant.
We’ll meet at the Eagle Mine Information Center in downtown Marquette (153 A West Washington Street) and then hop on a bus to the mine site.
Humboldt Mill Tours
Mill tours run from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on the following dates: June 26, July 17, July 31, August 14, September 11, and September 25.
If you’ve ever wondered what happens to ore once it leaves the mine, the mill tour is for you. It’s a walking tour that starts at the Humboldt Mill administrative office and takes you through the full process—from crushing and grinding to flotation and loading for shipment. You’ll follow the same path the ore takes, from haul truck to rail car.
Be prepared to walk for about an hour, including up and down stairs and across metal grating. Transportation to the mill is not provided, so you'll drive yourself and meet us inside the Administration Building after parking in the Visitor lot.
